I absolutely LOVE this painting! Even when I was younger it truly fascinated me. Don't you really want to know what they are looking at? It captures human emotion so well. *sigh* so wonderful...

One woman smiles (possibly giggling) and hides her girlish expression of both fancy and joy behind an apron (or rather some woven/knitted material) creating an appearance of modesty/shyness that is generally related to a man as flirting, while the other stares on unabashedly with a sense of fantasy passing before her eyes and mind...perhaps they are looking at a procession of soldiers (Red Coats)? This is the best guess that comes to mind. What can make girls dreamy, “shy,” and giggly?

I agree with "Armand," a superb job capturing the reality of human demeanor.
